The Spartans have appeared in 33 NCAA Tournaments, reaching the Sweet Sixteen 20 instances, the Elite Eight 14 times, the Final Four ten occasions, and the National Championship recreation thrice. They have reached the Final Four 3 times as a No. 1 seed, 3 times as a No. 2 seed, twice as a No. 5 seed, and as soon as as a No. 7 seed.

Following the enlargement of the NCAA Tournament to sixty four teams in 1985, Heathcote returned the Spartans, led by the future MSU all-time scoring chief, Scott Skiles, to the Tournament with a fifth-place end within the Big Ten. MSU once more reached the NCAA Tournament the next 12 months after ending third in the Big Ten with a 23–eight record. Led by Skiles and Darryl Johnson, they superior to the Sweet Sixteen earlier than shedding.
